This is Dalea frutescens (black dalea). Distributed from southern Oklahoma and central Texas, west to Arizona and south to northern Mexico. Black dalea was once more widespread, but do to it’s high palatability, cattle and deer relish it. If you live in central or west Texas and find this species growing on your land, make note of its location and protect it! They prefer to grow on well drained upland soils, often on inhospitable sun bleached limestone caliche devoid of other less sun hardy plant species. In fact, the quickest way to kill black dalea in a garden setting is to OVER water it. Remember if you are a land owner( in central Texas especially) Keep an eye out for this beautiful and increasingly scarce species. And if you find it,make note of it’s location for preservation. Thanks for your time, and happy flower watching!
